History:

The Russian Kirov-Class (Project 1144 Orlan) is the largest and most heavily armed surface combatants built since World War II. Developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1970s, these nuclear-powered warships were designed to counter U.S. carrier strike groups and project Soviet naval power globally. The lead ship, Kirov (later renamed Admiral Ushakov), was commissioned in 1980.

Armed with a massive array of weapons, including P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles, long-range surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, and guns, the Kirov-class combines the firepower of a cruiser with the endurance of a capital ship. Nuclear propulsion gives them virtually unlimited range, though they also have auxiliary steam turbines. Their imposing size and armament earned them the NATO classification “battlecruisers.”

Of the four ships built, only Pyotr Velikiy remains in active service as of the 2020s. These warships remain symbols of Russiann naval strength and are undergoing modernization to extend their operational life into the coming decades.
